Identifying apnoea in preterm infants
To shed light on how apnoea impacts the baby’s physiology and neurophysiology, we focus on the development of new measures and analysis techniques. These techniques will further our understanding of how respiration, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and brain activity are affected by apnoeas.
Detection of apnoeas in premature infants is difficult due to artefacts on the recordings. We developed and validated a new method that quantifies inter-breath intervals and apnoeas from pneumographic data. This work was published in BMJ Open Respir Res.
We are using this method to investigate how breathing changes in premature infants across their hospital stay, and we are developing new methods to explore how respiratory activity relates to brain activity.
